Michael Thacker (b. 1977) is a British sculptor renowned for his abstract stone works that harmonise form, surface and light. He studied Fine Art (Sculpture) at Loughborough University, graduating in 1999, before training in stone masonry at York College, where he was awarded the S & J Whitehead Award for his mastery of the craft. Michael Thacker+1

Thacker spent fifteen years working as a stone carver and mason at Lincoln Cathedral, a period that profoundly shaped his artistic language. The architectural rhythms, proportions and structural clarity of his environment continue to be reflected in his work today. Michael Thacker

Working primarily in limestone, granite and marble, Thacker’s sculptures are distinguished by their balance of gently flowing organic curves and precisely honed geometric forms. He often incorporates 24-carat gold, silver or platinum leaf to capture and reflect light from within the carved surfaces — an approach that gives his work a luminous quality and invites prolonged viewing from multiple angles. Winsor Birch

Natural references such as seedpods, shells and fossils inform Thacker’s thinking, shaping works that explore the idea of form emerging from within — the hard stone yielding to reveal movement and growth. Winsor Birch

His work has been included in more than thirty exhibitions across the UK, including the Chelsea Flower Show, the London Art Fair, City Gallery Leicester, City Art House Lincoln, Nottingham Castle and the Living Gallery Birmingham, and features in both public and private collections. Winsor Birch

Today, Thacker works full-time from his studio in Lincoln, creating sculptures that resonate with collectors for their material richness, thoughtful balance and enduring presence.
