The Elemental Landscape: Earth, Fire, Air and Water explores Diana Neale’s imaginative and emotional engagement with place. Rooted in the local landscape, her paintings move beyond observation, blending memory, atmosphere and intuition to create spaces that feel both familiar and timeless.

Neale’s work is built through layers. Layers of time and place, material and thought. Using oil, cold wax, dry pigments and tissue paper collage, Neale slowly constructs surfaces that recede into memory and the imaginal.

In the Romantic tradition, landscape becomes a reflection of the psyche, connecting artist and viewer through atmosphere and feeling. Her simplified forms become meditations on place, where the subject is fading light, stillness, sunset reflections and brooding cloud.

Guided by colour, each painting carries a mood that resonates with the subconscious, sometimes with yearning or historical melancholy, sometimes with peace. These are landscapes shaped by feeling, remembrance and imagination.

“I paint half-memories, random images which come to mind and pure imagination, so when I’m asked, ‘where is this?’ I have no answer; the ‘where’ (or what) is in the mind of the viewer; people see what they want to see and feel what they feel.”

As Alfred Watkins described, her work draws on a ‘flood of ancestral memory’, where time collapses and the land holds echoes of countless ages, the contours of time itself. Neale’s paintings invite us into that space, where earth, fire, air and water become pathways to connection and reflection.

Neale works from her garden studio in the heart of the Pewsey Vale, with panoramic views of Salisbury Plain and the North Wessex Downs. After twenty years in private psychotherapy practice, she became a full-time artist in 2016, bringing sensitivity and perception into her painting.
