Orlik’s witty image of the ‘parting’ suggest separation and division. Here a ‘building’ – comprised of two thin walls (as thin as pieces of carboard or playing cards) with two square, pierced windows - are ‘parting’ – falling away from each other; they are connected (and perhaps held up) only by a woven long, thick twist of hair which will fall when the cards fall. Humorously, the hair also suggests the neat, straight ‘parting’ on a head of hair. At the moment, the two sides seem precariously balanced as if frozen in the act of falling apart. The thick twine of hair, like Rapunzel’s hair, hangs out of the window on the far wall and suggests that there is a pause in the act of falling/ending: a suggestion that rescue may come and perhaps the rosy tint on the side of the far wall suggests hope. The shadows of the walls are like patches of water, again giving a suggestion of Rapunzel’s tower, with a hint of a moat surrounding the walls which will need to be scaled.

The thin, leaning structures of the walls are reminiscent of the architecture of Carlo Scarpa, which seems to fold and float in space, defying gravity.
