The big perfect watermelon, clown smile dominates Friends which is part architecture, part fruit. Above the watermelon slice, a large double arch acts as the lips, and steps lead up behind entering the mouth, with pointed straight columns, eight on each row, like a set of very straight, perfect teeth receding into the distance. The architecture resembles a grand Hollywood pseudo-classical, art deco set and it suggests all the aplomb and self-assurance associated with the razzmatazz of big-time Hollywood. A round, bouncy-ball sun or moon appears above one of the arches, like a caricature of a beauty-spot of a glamorous Hollywood star. The initially joyful image perturbingly has a duplicitous other side, as we register the apex of the double-arch which forms a tonsil or a barbed tongue ready to verbally strike. Some loose threads float in front of the watermelon, like splashes of saliva; they are tied in the middle, perhaps denoting an entanglement or contract that cannot be untied.
