The sitter is Paul Kasmin, aged 6 or 7, eldest son of John Kasmin, the London art dealer who was integral to the London's bohemian art scene in the 60s and 70s with Hockney and Procktor at the fore. The print is based on an earlier watercolour and became the menu design for Odin's Restaurant and Langan's Bistro in London, both run by Peter Langan. Five of the first set of proofs depict tomato as opposed to pea soup.

Since his death in 2003, there has been a resurgence in interest in the work of Patrick Procktor (1936-2003). In the 1960s, Procktor was heralded as part of an upcoming group of artists. In 1964, Whitechapel Gallery included his work in an exhibition of work by twelve young artists including David Hockney, Patrick Caulfield, John Hoyand and Bridget Riley entitled The New Generation.
