The path is flanked by lush greenery and patches of red flowers, suggesting a vibrant, natural setting. A single figure, dressed in dark clothing with a white headpiece, is seen from behind, walking down the path towards the houses. The sky above is a mix of soft blues and pinks, adding a serene and dreamy quality to the landscape. The overall style of the painting is impressionistic, with loose brushstrokes and a focus on capturing the essence of the scene rather than fine details.
Gabrielle Bellocq was born in the Paye de Loire region in western France near the coast. She was a French Neo-impressionist pastel artist, known as a colourist, and her works, which were not painted from life, included a variety of colours that produced an unusual perspective and impressionistic effects. From a young age she developed a passion for painting and was taught to copy others’ work through her painting instruction from the nuns at the Couvent de Saint-Sornin. Having previously worked in watercolours and guache from circa.1950 she abandoned the medium to concentrate solely on using pastels, which she would dedicate herself to for more than 30 years.
