Orlik’s kite soars above a patchwork field of bright colours compartmentalised into shapes. The kite is created as a Chinese box kite which is also a World War one biplane. The outline of the kite is made up of bamboo which is demarcated in red and the sides of the kite are transformed from the usual bright colours to grey strips of fabric which blow out behind, transformed into tattered, stylised grey flames – like something seen in a black and white film – battered from a fierce sky battle; the ‘tail’ of the kite is a witch’s besom broom stick. The colours of the ground beneath contradict the grey of the kite and, alongside the witch’s broom, evoke images of cinema: the imaginative and colourful inner world of the Wizard of Oz – changing from the grey world of war to the glorious technicolour world of the interior, transformative imagination.
