James Lynch
Framed: 80 x 95 cm.; 31½ x 37½ in.
James Lynch grew up in Wiltshire and lives in Somerset. Since his first sell-out exhibition in the West Country in the 1980s he has won awards, exhibited regularly in London and received many commissions from private clients and corporations. He is a painter of the English landscape and skies, often inspired by wild flying with his paraglider. He paints using the ancient medium of egg tempera, which he makes from raw ground pigments and egg yolks from his hens. The paintings are built up over time with many glazes of paint. As well as working on gesso-coated panels, he makes smaller, more impromptu paintings on sized paper.
The present work portrays a vast, golden wheat field under a dramatic and expansive sky filled with swirling, tumultuous clouds. In the far distance you can see the villages of Aldwincle and Titchmarsh, with trees and buildings nestled against the landscape. The clouds dominate the upper part of the painting, with intricate textures and shades of grey, blue, and white, creating a sense of impending weather change. The overall scene captures a moment of natural beauty and power, highlighting Lynch's skill in landscape painting and his ability to convey atmospheric depth and mood.
“Lynch is very much part of the archetypal English landscape and its mythology. He belongs to a long line of truly English painters.”
