Although Dante Gabriel Rossetti is best known for his literary and mythological subjects, he was also a gifted portraitist. Alongside the idealised female types that defined the Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic, Rossetti produced a remarkable series of intimate portrait studies, capturing family members, friends, and the wives and daughters of patrons which posses a striking psychological insight. In these works, his fascination with beauty is joined by an acute sensitivity to character and individuality.

The present drawing is a particularly fine example. The sitter’s sharply defined features, composed expression and direct gaze convey a strong and self-assured personality, enhanced by the simplicity of her dress and the absence of decorative embellishment. Rossetti’s economy of means allows the strength of the sitter’s presence to emerge with unusual clarity.

Though her identity has not been conclusively established, the drawing has traditionally been associated with the Ionides family, one of the most important artistic and collecting dynasties of Victorian London. The sitter bears a notable resemblance to Rossetti’s portrait of Aglaia Coronio (née Ionides) in the Victoria and Albert Museum, suggesting a possible connection.

The drawing also boasts a distinguished modern provenance, having belonged to the artist and Slade Professor Randolph Schwabe (1885–1948), before passing through the family of Sir Harry Jefferson Barnes, Director of the Glasgow School of Art. Combining Rossetti’s rare gifts as both draughtsman and observer, it stands as a compelling example of the artist’s portraiture at its most direct and personal.
