James Lynch is a celebrated English landscape and skyscape painter renowned for his luminous, bird's-eye views of the British countryside, particularly across Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset where the artist lives. Largely self-taught, he began his career in the late 1970s working mostly in gouache and watercolour before adopting egg tempera - an ancient Renaissance technique that he has mastered. He hand-makes his own paints from raw pigments and fresh egg yolks to build up dozens of translucent layers on gesso-coated panels. As an avid paraglider, Lynch draws direct inspiration from his experiences flying alongside birds, capturing dramatic shifts in light, rolling clouds, and panoramic terrains from unique aerial perspectives. This is seen to dramatic effect in the present work, depicting the ancient fortified landscape near Westbury in Wiltshire, with its famous white horse translucent on a crisp winter's day.
