The painting is of the central courtyard of the St Paul de Mausole Monastery. The Monastery in St Remy de Provence was an asylum where Vincent van Gogh was a self-admitted patient between May 1889 and May 1890. Many of his most well known works were painted in and around the grounds of the Monastery. The window centre right on the painting is believed to be one of the two rooms Van Gogh occupied.
