It is in fact a loose copy of a medieval manuscript probably from the Pontifical of Guillaume Durand, Avignon. These manuscripts had a theme of a knight in armour fighting snails and wild creatures. There are many theories about this topic but I personally think it is very simple. In those days, snails and wild creatures could devastate an essential crop and human life depended on it. In this sculpture the hare and the hound are fighting back!
It is made from stoneware clay decorated with oxides and underglaze colours.
