Denis Mitchell was a prominent member of the St Ives school of artists that became focal point for avant-garde modernism in the post-War era. Mitchell worked at Barbara Hepworth's studio assistant from 1949 - 1959. Like Hepworth, he had an affinity for organic forms either carving directly in wood or through bronze casting, which drew inspiration from Cornwall's geological topography. Another example from the Pelyn edition is in the collection of the Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro.
Mitchell's sculptures are held in numerous public collections including the Tate Gallery, London, the Arts Council of Great Britain, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California, the National Gallery of New South Wales, Australia, and the National Gallery of Wellington, New Zealand.
