One of Britain's most celebrated sculptor's of the 20th century, Lynn Chadwick secured his reputation at the 1952 Venice Biennale when he won the International Sculpture Prize, ahead of Alberto Giacometti. In the late 1940s and 50s, Chadwick used animal motifs to powerful effect as part of Britain's celebrated post-war generation of sculptors, whose existential angst Herbert Read famously dubbed 'the geometry of fear'. The lion first appeared in Chadwick's work in 1960; the distinct form he used, as seen in the present work, was inspired by a 7th century Assyrian relief of a dying lioness which Chadwick saw at the British Museum. The present work is number 1 from an edition of 9.
