The painting depicts a scene involving a steam locomotive and several figures. The locomotive is detailed with features such as a steam dome, smoke stack, and safety valve, and it has the word "WESTERN" visible on its side. The colour of the locomotive appears to be a shade of green.

Two workers in blue overalls are actively engaged with the locomotive, one standing on top of it, performing some maintenance or operational task. Another group of two individuals is seen standing beside the locomotive, possibly supervising or observing the activity.

The overall style of the painting is loose and impressionistic, with soft edges and a watercolor-like effect, which gives the scene a sense of motion and atmosphere. The background is lightly sketched, ensuring the focus remains on the locomotive and the figures. The painting is framed in a simple, elegant gold frame with a double mount, one in cream and a thin inner border in white, complementing the artwork without overwhelming it.

Bernard Phillip Batchelor was a painter, born at Teddington, Middlesex. He studied at St. Martin's School of Art from 1946 to 1949 under R. Kirkland Jamieson and Andrew Freeth. Batchelor then went on to the City and Guilds of London Art School. After finishing his education Batchelor worked in the publicity department of Iliffe Press.
Batchelor was well known for his watercolour marine and coastal subjects. He has exhibited at R.A, R.W.S., R.E., N.E.A.C. and the Catto Gallery, London. Batchelor was elected an Associate of the R.W.S. in 1967 and a full member ten years later. Examples of his work are in the G.A.C.
